Ingredients

  • 1 lb shrimp (450 g)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120 g)

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder (5 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (2.5 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (1 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (1 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (1 g)
  • 1 cup cold water (240 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (15 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (15 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (30 g)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (30 ml)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated (5 g)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (15 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (15 ml)
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise (60 ml)
  • 12 bao buns
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots (60 g)
  • 1/2 cup sliced cucumber (60 g)
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (25 g)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (15 g)


Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Gradually add cold water to the dry ingredients, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Dip shrimp into the batter, ensuring they are well-coated.
  5. Fry shrimp in the pan until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove shrimp from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  7. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, gochujang, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, and rice vinegar.
  8. Heat the sauce over medium heat, stirring until it thickens slightly.
  9. Add the fried shrimp to the saucepan, tossing to coat them evenly in the sticky sauce.
  10. Steam or warm the bao buns according to package instructions.
  11. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise inside each bao bun.
