Description
Quick and elegant seared ahi tuna steaks that capture the essence of coastal dining.
Ingredients
- 2 ahi tuna (yellowfin tuna) steaks (about 4 oz. each, 1″ thick)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (preferably low sodium)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 tablespoon oil (canola, olive, or other high-heat oil)
- Green onions (for garnish)
- Toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
- Lime wedges (for serving)
Instructions
- Pat the tuna steaks dry with a paper towel.
- Place the steaks on a plate or inside a plastic bag.
- In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, honey, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Stir until the honey dissolves.
- Pour the marinade over the tuna steaks. Turn to coat completely. Optional: Allow to marinate for at least 10 minutes, or up to overnight in the refrigerator.
- Heat a medium skillet on high heat until very hot.
- Add oil to the hot skillet.
- Sear the tuna for 1 – 1½ minutes on each side for medium rare.
- Remove the tuna to a cutting board. Slice into ½-inch pieces and serve. Garnish with green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and lime wedges, if desired.
Notes
Ensure the skillet is hot before adding the fish for the best sear. Use a spatula for flipping to maintain the tuna’s delicate texture.
