Ingredients

  • 454 g raw shrimp, peeled, deveined, and tails removed
  • 80 ml chicken or vegetable broth, or substitute water
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) coconut sugar, or brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) minced ginger
  • pinch red pepper flakes
  • scant 1 tbsp (15 ml) arrowroot powder, or cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) sesame oil
  • chopped scallions
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Mix the broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and arrowroot powder in a small bowl, whisking until well blended.
  2. Heat sesame oil in a large pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the shrimp and sauté for 1 minute on each side.
  3. Stir the sauce once more, then pour it over the shrimp in the pan. Mix everything together and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the sauce is thickened and the shrimp are completely cooked.
  4. Sprinkle with chopped scallions and sesame seeds. Enjoy with cooked white rice and broccoli.

Notes

  • Marinate the shrimp in the sauce mixture for 30 minutes before cooking for a more flavorful dish.
  • Make sure not to overcook the shrimp to prevent them from becoming tough and rubbery.
  • Enhance the dish by adding vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas for added color and nutrients. Adjust the red pepper flakes to suit your desired level of spiciness.
