- 4 cups water or chicken broth

Instructions
- In a large saucepan, bring 4 cups of water or chicken broth to a boil.
- Gradually whisk in the grits, reducing the heat to low.
- Cook, stirring frequently, until the grits are thick and creamy, about 20-25 minutes.
- Stir in the milk and butter, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- For added flavor, stir in cheese until melted if desired.
- Serve warm.
