Ingredients
- 1 pound (454 g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined (450 grams)
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) cornstarch (15 grams)
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt (5 grams)
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground black pepper (5 grams)
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Chinese five-spice powder (5 grams)
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil, for frying (120 milliliters)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 fresh red chili, sliced
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) soy sauce (15 milliliters)
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sesame oil (5 milliliters)
Instructions
- Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels.
- In a bowl, mix the cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and Chinese five-spice powder.
- Coat the shrimp with the cornstarch mixture evenly.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
- Add the shrimp to the pan in a single layer.
- Fry the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the shrimp from the pan and drain on paper towels.
- Discard excess oil, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
- Lower the heat to medium and add the minced garlic.
- Stir-fry the garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the chopped green onions and sliced red chili to the pan.
- Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until the onions are tender.
- Return the shrimp to the pan.
- Add the soy sauce and sesame oil to the shrimp mixture.
- Toss everything together to coat the shrimp evenly.
- Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat.
- Serve the salt and pepper shrimp immediately.
