Description
Savor the warm, comforting flavors of Cajun shrimp and grits, a Southern favorite that’s easy to prepare and irresistible.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup uncooked grits
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
- Chopped parsley or sliced green onions or chives, for garnish
Instructions
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the whole milk, water, and kosher salt. Bring this mixture to a boil.
- Add the uncooked grits, freshly ground black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk until smooth and lump-free, allowing it to thicken slightly.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the saucepan, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat once cooked through and the liquid is absorbed.
- Stir in the unsalted butter and grated cheddar cheese while the grits are still hot. Mix until fully melted and combined. Cover to keep warm.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the unsalted butter. Add the minced garlic and cook briefly until fragrant.
- Add the shrimp in a single layer. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side until they turn pink and are cooked through.
- Sprinkle Cajun seasoning and lime juice over the shrimp, stirring to incorporate the flavors.
- Spoon the warm grits onto plates or shallow bowls and top with the Cajun shrimp mixture. Garnish with chopped parsley, sliced green onions, or chives.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
Use fresh, wild-caught shrimp for the best flavor. Adjust the spice level by modifying the amount of Cajun seasoning.
