Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
- 5 green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) sesame seeds
- 10 button mushrooms, sliced, or 1 Portobello mushroom, sliced
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (60 ml)
- 1/4 cup honey (60 ml)
- 1/4 cup vegetable broth (60 ml)
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil (30 ml)
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) hot sauce
- 2 cups snow peas, ends trimmed (about 60 snow peas) (300 g)
- 1/2 lb beef pasta, preferably Fettuccine (225 g)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (30 ml)
- 1 pound (454 g) beef
- salt & pepper
- 1 tablespoon honey (15 ml)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (15 ml)
Instructions
- Warm olive oil in a big skillet over medium flame. Toss in the chopped green onions and sesame seeds, stirring them for a couple of minutes. Then introduce the sliced mushrooms and let them cook for an additional two minutes over medium heat. Take the skillet off the heat, and pour in soy sauce, honey, vegetable broth, sesame oil, and hot sauce, stirring everything thoroughly to blend.
- In a separate pot, boil the snow peas for 3-5 minutes until they are tender but still have a crunch. Drain the water.
- In a different large pot, bring water to a boil and prepare the pasta for 10-12 minutes or until it reaches the desired firmness, following the pasta package instructions. Drain the pasta.
- Combine the drained snow peas and pasta with the vegetables and sauce in the large skillet from step 1. Stir everything together and heat on medium-low until warmed through.
- Set the broiler to preheat. In a large skillet, heat it on high. Generously season the beef with salt and pepper on one side. Add vegetable oil to the hot skillet; the oil should sizzle. Place the beef in the skillet seasoned side down and sear for 4 minutes, moving the meat around to ensure the oil coats its surface and prevents sticking.
- After these 4 minutes, flip the beef over and sear the other side for an additional 3 minutes on high heat. At this stage, you may choose to remove any excess fat if you prefer.
- Combine honey and soy sauce, warming slightly in the microwave or on the stovetop to make the honey easier to work with. Coat the top of the beef with the honey-soy mixture. Put the beef under the broiler for 3 minutes, being cautious not to let it burn. Apply more of the sauce midway if you wish. Broil for a total of 3 minutes until the top of the beef gets slightly charred.
- Now, the beef is ready to be enjoyed. Alternatively, you can keep it covered until it’s time to serve. If the beef is a bit underdone in the center, covering it for a few minutes will help it finish cooking perfectly without drying out by the time you’re ready to eat.
Notes
- Consider using tofu or tempeh as a tasty vegetarian alternative to beef.
- Opt for low-sodium soy sauce to reduce salt while maintaining flavor.
- Try whole wheat or gluten-free pasta for dietary preferences, and garnish with fresh cilantro or parsley for added color and freshness.
